No. LCDS is an open program, so students never have to register for our classes. If you are interested in taking a class and have never been to the studio before, all you need to do is arrive at least a half hour before the class you'd like to take and we will be happy to assist you. Some master classes and workshops do require pre-registration, but this will always be specified.

All LCDS classes are $15 each. 10, 20, 30, 40 and unlimited class cards can be purchased and offer a discount over classes if purchased separately. Professional class cards are also available upon presentation of union card or other proof of professional affiliation. More information about class fees can be found here.

LCDS features a class card system that expedites your sign-in process and saves you money over individually purchased classes. Classes are easily deducted from account and you can check your remaining balance online. There is a one-time registration fee of $10 for class card purchases. All LCDS regulations apply. Yes. The single class rate is $15/class. Because we have an open program, you can take most of our classes at any time during the session, with the exception of Basic levels, which are progressive. If you have no previous training and are interested in taking Basic level classes, it is recommended that you purchase a class card at the beginning of the session.

Yes. Whether you are paying for a single class or purchasing a class card, arriving 30-45 minutes early will help ensure that you make it to class in time.

African is a traditional Nigerian dance class emphasizes the dancer and life as a community versus as an individual. The body is divided into several centers of movement, with each area being able to move to different rhythms of the music, generally a drumbeat. No previous experience necessary – all ages and abilities welcome!

Ballet began in the Italian courts and was developed into a form of concert dance under Louis XIV. Today, Ballet is highly technical and has its own vocabulary. The first portion of a class is at the barre, a tool used for dancers to find their balance and warm up their muscles. The second portion of class moves into the center of the room where dancers continue working, gradually building to longer and more complex combinations, ending with large jumps.

BeMoved® is a new dance fitness experience designed for adults of all movement abilities. Classes begin with easy to follow therapeutic movements of the upper and lower body, then flow into dance styles inspired by different musical genres – Bollywood, jazz, Latin, and disco! No previous experience necessary.

Dance Latin Grooves fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy to follow moves to create a dynamic dance fitness class, helping you achieve long term health benefits while having fun.  No previous dance experience necessary.

Hip-Hop derives from street dances created in America during the 1970s, such as popping, locking, and breaking. Classes have a heavy focus on individual expression, rhythm, and musicality. Basic level is recommended for students with no prior experience.

Jazz draws its roots from the African American vernacular and in the 1950s expanded to popular social dances. In the mid 20th century, Jazz dance took on Carribean influences and became a performing art with a strong center of ballet technique. Styles of this dance technique range from Broadway Jazz to Contemporary. Basic class recommended for students with no prior experience.

Modern was born in the early 20th century and is a dance style that centers on a dancer's own interpretations instead of structured steps, as in classical ballet dancing. Modern dancers reject the limitations of classical ballet and favor movements derived from the expression of their inner feelings. These dancers favored a more relaxed, free style of dancing. Basic class recommended for students with no prior experience.

Musical Theater is a dance class focused on choreography from Broadway musicals, and integrates many styles of jazz as well as acting. Recommended for dancers and performers at Beginning/Intermediate level in ballet and jazz.

Pilates, developed by Joseph Pilates, is a physical fitness method that seeks to develop controlled movement from a strong core. All group classes are mat classes and all LCDS instructors are Romana’s Authentic Pilates certified. Basic class recommended for students with no prior experience.

Tap originated as a street dance in early 20th century America. Dancers wear tap shoes- hard-soled and typically leather with metal plates on the balls and heels of the sole- and create percussive sounds and rhythms against a wood floor. Improvisation and fun are key components of tap! Basic class recommended for students with no prior experience.

Vinyasa Yoga aligns movement and breath to create a continuous flow of postures. Attention is focused on inhalation and exhalation to transition between poses versus achieving perfect body alignment. No previous experience necessary.

If you have no previous training in the area of dance you want to study, enroll in the Basic level. If you have previous training, you are welcome to observe classes through the studio windows to determine which level is appropriate for you or simply pay the single class rate and try one out. If the class is offered more than once per week, you are encouraged to observe the variance in style and difficulty of the different instructors. Attend the class for which you feel most prepared and move to higher or lower levels as appropriate. You are not restricted to your initial class choice.

The Basic level is designed for students who have never had any previous dance training, or have not had training in that particular dance discipline. The beginning level is best suited for students who have had some prior experience in the given dance discipline.

Appropriate shoes are required for class: jazz shoes for jazz class; ballet shoes for ballet class; socks or bare feet for modern and African class; tap shoes for tap class and clean sneakers for hip-hop. Students should wear clothing that is comfortable, does not restrict movement and does not inhibit the instructor from ensuring proper technique.

Groups of five or more must fill out a Group Visit Request Form which is available by contacting Claire Bataille. These forms should be submitted two weeks prior to the date of the expected visit.

At the beginning of the semester, you must bring your Roosevelt ID card, a copy of your class schedule that LCDS can keep and complete an LCDS information sheet. LCDS will provide you with a syllabus and attendance record sheet. Roosevelt students are responsible for fully participating in 14 classes per credit hour, the majority of which must be in the course for which they are enrolled.

Yes, you are welcome to view, through the studio windows, the various rehearsals that occur in the LCDS studios each day. During such rehearsals, you are likely to see several company members who teach classes at LCDS.

While LCDS does not provide housing for students, you may contact the studio for descriptions of several housing options in the Chicago area.
