Hubbard Street’s Summer Intensives are rigorous training programs designed for dancers, ages 13–17, and pre-professional dancers, ages 18–24. Dancers train in ballet and other techniques, plus choreography is integrated throughout the five different programs offered in Chicago from June to August, and at University of Southern California in June. Entry requirements, location, and time commitments vary for our five Intensives. All students who audition during our national audition tour will be placed in the level that best fits their age and skill.

Our Intermediate/Advanced Summer Intensive program is ideal for serious dancers, ages 13-17 who are working towards advanced and pre-professional course work. Students take ballet, Modern, improvisation, yoga, Pilates, and composition courses. Students apply techniques through the learning of repertory excerpts and perform for family and friends at the conclusion of each one-week Intensive session.

Dates: June 11-22, June 25-July 6, August 6-10, 2018

Location: Hubbard Street Dance Center, located in Chicago’s West Loop.

Schedule: Classes are held 10am–5:30pm, Monday through Friday. Students may attend one, two  or all three sessions.

Tuition: $1,200 for both two week sessions in June. $600 for one week session in August.

Our Advanced Summer Intensive program is for students ages 14-17 considering careers in dance performance. Students attend daily ballet and modern technique classes, with additional study of Pilates, yoga, improvisation, contemporary, and hip-hop. Students learn repertory excerpts as well as complete works, culminating in a showing on the final day. Students will be placed by age and skill level through our national audition tour.

Location: Columbia College Chicago, located in Chicago’s South Loop.

Schedule: Classes are held from 10am–6pm, Monday through Friday with an additional classes on Saturday. All students must attend all four weeks of the session.

Los Angeles

Location: University of Southern California Glorya Kaufman School of Dance in Los Angeles

Schedule: Classes are held from 9am – 5pm, Monday through Friday. Students must attend both weeks of the session.

Our Pre-Professional Summer Intensive program in Chicago is for advanced and early-career dancers, ages 18–24. Dancers attend daily technique classes, with additional opportunities to originate choreography, and study Pilates, yoga, improvisation, and partnering. Attendees learn repertory excerpts as well as complete works, culminating in a showing on the final day. Students will be placed by age and skill level through our national audition tour.

Hubbard Street Dance Chicago is excited to partner with the University of Southern California’s Glorya Kaufman School of Dance to house our third, Pre-Professional Summer Intensive for dancers ages 18–24. Dancers will attend daily ballet and supplementary Somatics classes, which will prepare them to spend the day with two selected choreographers. Dancers will work with choreographers to create original works, which will be shared in a showing at the conclusion of the two-week intensive.

Los Angeles

Dates: June 11-June 22, 2018

 Location: University of Southern California Glorya Kaufman School of Dance in Los Angeles.

Curriculum: In this choreography-focused intensive, dancers will work with guest choreographers, including Hubbard Street choreographic fellows Alice Klock and Florian Lochner, to create original works.

General Audition Information:

  • Dancers should audition for the audition that corresponds with their age.
    • 18 - 24 years old – Pre-Professional Summer Intensive
      • Please note that dancers must be 18 years of age by July 1, 2018
      • If the audition team deems a 17 year-old ready for the Pre-Professional level Intensive, they will be invited.
    • 13 – 17 years old – Advanced and Intermediate/Advanced Summer Intensive
      • Please note that dancers must be 13 years of age by June 1, 2018
      • Dancers will be invited to the program best suited for their age and level.
  • Students are accepted into the Hubbard Street’s training programs by audition only. Results will be sent via email within 1-2 weeks of a dancer’s scheduled audition date.
  • Auditions will consist of a ballet class and based on the discretion of the instructor, students may learn Hubbard Street repertory. Unless the number of dancers requires the instructor to break the students into smaller groups, all dancers will receive a full ballet class, and no cuts will be made.
  • On the day of the audition, registration will begin 30 minutes prior to the audition start time. Dancers will need to bring two copies each of their dance resume or CV, and headshot.
  • The fee to audition is $25, payable upon pre-registration. Walk-ins will be accepted if space permits; the fee at the door is $30 cash only/exact change.
  • Resumes should be no more than one page in length and should list the dancer’s performance & training experience (intensives, master classes, workshops, etc), as well as the current educational institute that he/she is enrolled at.
  • Headshots should represent what you look like in the studio. Professional photos are not required or encouraged. There is no specific size requirement for photos.
  • A leotard, tights, and ballet shoes need to be worn for ballet class. Hair should be clean and out of the dancer's face. Pointe shoes are not needed for technique class. Form fitting apparel can be worn for repertory as long as body lines are clearly visible.
  • A limited amount of financial aid is available to students attending our Summer Intensives. Students are not eligible to apply until they have been accepted into our intensive. Aid will be based solely on financial need. We have no merit scholarship awards.
  • If you are unable to attend a live audition, you may request to submit a video audition. Video audition requests are approved on a case by case basis and due to the high volume of inquiries, not all requests will be granted. We highly encourage all students to audition in person.
  • To request a video audition, please email Krista Ellensohn by January 15. Based on the individual’s situation, you will be given further direction regarding our video submission process. All requests and video submission must be received by February 1 or they will not be considered.
  • In the event of inclement weather, updates or audition cancellations will be posted on the Hubbard Street Dance Chicago’s Facebook page. Should we need to cancel an audition due to weather or another unforeseeable cause, dancers who pre-registered for the audition, would be granted the opportunity to send a video audition.
