Video Audition Information & Requirements

STEP 1: Complete our online registration.

STEP 2: Submit the following materials via email to intensives@hubbardstreetdance.com:
  • Resume or CV (1 page max)
    Resumes should list the dancer's performance and training experience to date, primary dance instructors, and current place of training.

  • Headshot
    Headshots need to resemble how the dancer appears in the studio. It does not have to be a professional photo, nor a specific color. A black & white photo is acceptable.

  • Video
    Videos must include a spoken introduction, ballet barre, center floor work, and an improv component. Videos must be sent through a Vimeo or YouTube link. Please adjust the privacy settings so your video is accessible without a password. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. Guidelines are listed below.

VIDEO GUIDELINES

Part 1: Vocal Introduction
Please clearly articulate the following questions below:  

  • What is your full name?
  • What is your current age?
  • Where is your city, or country of residence?
  • What inspires you to dance?
  • Why are you interested in auditioning for Hubbard Street’s Summer Intensive?

Part 2: Ballet Barre
Each combination should be a minimum of 32 counts, executed with music, and performed on the dancer’s right and left side at the ballet barre. 

  • Tendu with Ronde Jambes
  • Fondu with Developpes
  • Grand Battement

Part 3: Center Floor Work
Each combination should be a minimum of 32 counts, executed with music, and performed on the dancer’s right and left side in the center: 

  • A small + medium jumping phrase
  • Turning phrase
  • Movement phrase

Part 4: Improvisation
Please include 30 seconds of improv performed in the studio or stage (please do not include ensemble work). 

Additional Reminders:

  • Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
  • Upon completion of your online registration, please email intensives@hubbardstreetdance.com with a copy of your headshot, resume, and video link.
  • Videos must be sent through a Vimeo or YouTube link. Please adjust the privacy settings so your video is accessible without a password.
  • A dancer must meet our minimum age requirements by June 1, 2023, meaning a dancer must be at least 18 years of age by June 1, 2023 to attend our 18 – 25-year-old audition, and a dancer must be 13 years old by June 1, 2023 to attend our 13 – 17-year-old audition. 
  • A limited amount of financial aid is available to dancers attending our Summer Intensives. Dancers are eligible to apply for aid after they have been accepted into our Summer Intensives. Aid will be awarded based on financial need.
  • To attend our Programs, dancers must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, including any boosters for which they are eligible to receive.

Live Audition Information & Requirements

With the conclusion of our 2023 Audition Tour, live auditions are now closed. Audition results will be sent by email, within approximately 1 - 2 weeks of a dancer’s scheduled audition date.

  • Pre-registration for auditions is required for all scheduled auditions, and will close 24 hours before the scheduled audition date.
  • Dancers must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, including any boosters for which they are eligible to receive. Proof of vaccination will be required during check-in, on the day of the audition. Masks are strongly recommended and may be required depending on the building regulations at each audition location. 

  • Auditions will consist of a technique class followed by learning a short repertoire phrase and conclude with dancer improvisation.  Participants will need to be available for the entire audition duration listed. In the event a dancer is not available for the entirety of the audition, please notify our staff in advance for approval. 
  • Form fitting apparel and ballet shoes must be worn for ballet class. Body lines must be clearly visible. Hair should be pulled back and out of the dancer’s face. Hubbard Street does not perform works on pointe therefore; pointe work is not a part of our Summer curriculum and should not be worn at our audition. 
  • A dancer must meet our minimum age requirements by June 1, 2023, meaning a dancer must be at least 18 years of age by June 1, 2023 to attend our 18 – 25-year-old audition, and a dancer must be 13 years old by June 1, 2023 to attend our 13 – 17-year-old audition.
  • On the day of the audition, dancers are required to bring the following items:

    1) Resume (1 page max): Resumes should list the dancer's performance and training experience to date, primary dance instructors, and current place of training.

    8x10 Headshot: Headshots need to resemble how the dancer appears in the studio. It does not have to be a professional photo, nor a specific color. A black & white photo is acceptable.

    3) Vaccination Card: A vaccination card showing full vaccination against COVID-19, including with any boosters for which you are eligible, must be shown at the time of check-in to attend our live auditions. A photo of your vaccination card is permitted. While a vaccination card is not required to attend our virtual auditions, please note that dancers are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to participate in our 2023 Summer Intensive Programs.

    4) Signed Waiver: Dancers must print, sign, and bring page 3 of our waiver to the audition. All dancers under the age of 18 must have a legal guardian signature included on the waiver. Click the button below to download the waiver.

  • If you are using a shared studio space for our virtual audition, you will need to sign in from your own device. We will not permit dancers to share a single device unless approved by staff in advance.

  • If you are unable to attend a live audition, it is recommended to attend our virtual audition or submit a video audition for consideration. The deadline to submit a  video audition is January 31, 2023. Click the Video Auditions tab above to learn more about our video submission requirements. 
  • A limited amount of financial aid is available to dancers attending our Summer Intensives. Dancers are eligible to apply for aid after they have been accepted into our Summer Intensives. Aid will be awarded based on financial need.
  • In the event of inclement weather, updates or audition cancellations will be posted on the Hubbard Street Dance Chicago’s website. Should we need to cancel an audition due to weather or any other unforeseeable cause, dancers who pre-registered for the audition will be granted the opportunity to attend our virtual audition or submit a video audition.

NEW THIS YEAR: Social Media Audition Challenge

The Social Media Audition Challenge is now closed. Congratulations to the winners and thank you to all who participated!

Think you’ve got what it takes to get into HSDC’s Summer Intensive TEEN or EXPLORE Program with just a 30-second video? Audition by participating in our Social Media Audition Challenge and you could be fast-tracked through the admission process!

HOW TO ENTER:

  • Record a 30-second video of yourself dancing to music of your choice. You must choose a combination of three of the following styles: Ballet Barre, Center/Floor Work, Improvisation, Jazz, Cultural Dance, Hip-Hop. Moderate post-production/editing is permitted and encouraged.

  • To be considered, you must post your audition video publicly to TikTok or Instagram with the hashtag #GrowYourGlowHSDC and tag @hubbardstreet by Saturday, December 31, 2022. In order for us to track submissions, your account must be public and we will only be able to consider audition videos that use the hashtag #GrowYourGlowHSDC and tag @hubbardstreet.

  • Social Media Audition Challenge participants do not have to pay an audition fee. Please note that if you later choose to audition through any of the other traditional methods (in-person, Virtual, or Video), you must pay the registration fee for that audition.

  • Winners of the Social Media Audition Challenge will be accepted into the EXPLORE or TEEN Program and will be notified by January 9, 2023.

  • A limited number of finalists will win free Hubbard Street merchandise.

  • Participants who are not accepted through the Social Media Audition Challenge can still opt to audition through any of the other traditional methods (in-person on the Audition Tour, Virtual, or Video).
