Our Summer Intensives are rigorous training programs designed for motivated dancers ages 12–17, and aspiring pre-professional and early-career dancers ages 14–24. Attendees take daily classes in ballet and other techniques, plus choreography progressively integrated through four programs offered in Chicago from June to August.


Hubbard Street’s Summer Intensives offer unique opportunities for committed dancers to refine their skills in multiple forms, broaden their dance vocabulary, and explore the latest in contemporary movement with top artists in the field. Entry requirements and time commitments vary for our four Intensives. The following guidelines will assist you in determining which Summer Intensive best fits your dance training to date.

Level I:
For intermediate/advanced dancers
Recommended training: 4–6 years of ballet

Level II:
For advanced dancers.
Recommended training: 4–6 years of ballet and contemporary or modern

Levels III + IV:
For advanced and pre-professional dancers
Recommended training: 5 years of ballet and modern

INTENSIVE I: Preparatory
Our Summer Intensive I Preparatory programs are ideal for serious dancers who are working towards advanced and pre-professional course work. Intensive I students take ballet, modern, improvisation, and composition courses. Students apply techniques through the learning of repertory phrases and perform for family and friends at the University of Illinois at Chicago’s UIC Theatre at the conclusion of each one-week Intensive session.

The Intensive I Preparatory program is held at the Hubbard Street Dance Center, located in Chicago’s West Loop.

Auditions
For dancers ages 12–16

All students are evaluated individually for placement in the proper technique level.
Attendance at our placement audition is strongly recommended. It will be held on April 16, 2016 from 2-4pm at Hubbard Street Dance Center.

Program length
Three (1) week Intensive I sessions are offered. Students may attend one, two, or all three sessions. Each Session includes unique material and classwork. Students planning to audition for Hubbard Street’s Youth Dance Ensemble in fall 2016 must attend at least one Intensive 1 session.

Intensive II: Primary
Our Summer Intensive II Primary program prepares dancers to transition into pre-professional training. In addition to ballet, modern, and composition courses, Intensive II students also receive instruction in improvisation techniques, Pilates and yoga. Students learn repertory excerpts, culminating in a studio showing on the final day.

The Intensive II Primary program is hosted by the Lou Conte Dance Studio at the Hubbard Street Dance Center, located in Chicago’s West Loop.

This intensive was formerly offered as the Lou Conte Dance Studio’s Summer Teen Intensive.

Intensive III: Advanced
Our Summer Intensive III Advanced program is for students considering careers in dance performance. Students attend daily ballet and modern technique classes, with additional opportunities to study Pilates, yoga, improvisation, and hip-hop. Students learn repertory excerpts as well as complete works, culminating in a showing on the final day, and are offered discussions on topics such as careers in dance, health and wellness.

The Intensive III Advanced program is held on campus at Columbia College Chicago, located in Chicago’s South Loop.

Students will be housed at the East-West University Dorms, just a short walk from the studios. Rooms are double occupancy, fully-furnished apartments equipped with wireless internet, all-inclusive utilities, and a 24-hour attended lobby. Linens will be provided. Students will have access to building amenities: including a fitness center, student lounge spaces, laundry facilities (no additional cost), and a full-sized basketball court. An optional meal plan is available, which includes daily breakfast and dinner, and bagged lunch Monday through Friday. Chaperone supervision is provided by Hubbard Street Dance Staff.

Intensive IV: Pre-Professional
Our Summer Intensive IV Pre-Professional program is for advanced and early-career dancers. Dancers attend daily ballet and modern technique classes, with additional opportunities to originate choreography, and study Pilates, yoga, improvisation, and partnering. Attendees learn repertory excerpts as well as complete works, culminating in a showing on the final day, and are offered discussions on topics such as careers in dance, health and wellness.

The Intensive IV Pre-Professional program is held at the Hubbard Street Dance Center, located in Chicago’s West Loop.

Participants attending the Intensive IV Pre-Professional program who are not Chicago residents may choose to be housed at the Flats at East-West University Dorms, centrally located in Chicago’s Loop. Rooms are double occupancy, fully-furnished apartments equipped with wireless internet, all-inclusive utilities, and a 24-hour attended lobby. Linens will be provided.Students will have access to building amenities: including a fitness center, student lounge spaces, laundry facilities (no additional cost), and a full-sized basketball court. No meal plan, transportation or chaperone supervision provided.

Hubbard Street + USC Kaufman

Level IV Pre-Professional

Hubbard Street Dance Chicago is excited to partner with the University of Southern California’s Glorya Kaufman School of Dance to house our second, Pre-Professional Summer Intensive June 19 – June 30, 2017.

Acceptance to the Level IV USC Kaufman Summer Intensive program is by audition only. Dancers must attend one of our 2017 Summer Intensive Auditions or make other arrangements, if necessary. Those who are offered placement in our Level IV Summer Intensive may choose the two week Los Angeles program, June 19 – 30, 2017; the four-week Chicago Program; July 3 – July 28, 2017; or both programs for a total of six weeks.

Space for the Level IV USC Kaufman Summer Intensive is limited to 25 dancers – immediate registration upon notification of your acceptance is highly recommended. Both Chicago and Los Angeles Level IV Summer Intensives are designed for pre-professional and early-career dancers ages 18-24.

General Audition Information:

  • Students are accepted into the Hubbard Street Summer Intensive Program by audition only. Results will be sent via email within 1-2 weeks of a dancer’s scheduled audition date.
  • Registration will begin 30 minutes prior to the audition start time. There is no pre-registration for the audition.
  • Items you will need on the day of the audition include: a completed audition form, dance resume, headshot, and $20 audition fee. The audition fee is to be paid on the day of the audition by cash, check or credit card. All checks should be made payable to Hubbard Street Dance Chicago.
  • Dance resumes should be one page in length and should list the dancer’s performance & training experience (intensives, master classes, workshops, etc), as well as the current educational institute that he/she is enrolled at.
  • Headshots should represent what you look like in the studio. Professional photos are not required or encouraged. There is no specific size requirement.
  • Auditions will consist of a ballet class and based on the discretion of the instructor, students will learn Hubbard Street repertory. Unless the number of auditioners requires the instructor to break the students into smaller groups, all dancers will receive a full ballet class before being chosen to continue.
  • A leotard, tights, and ballet shoes need to be worn for ballet class. Hair should be clean and out of your face. Pointe shoes are not needed for technique class. Form fitting apparel can be worn for repertory as long as body lines are clearly visible.
  • Students who will be 18 years old by July 3, 2017, should audition with the 18-24 age group (Level IV). 17 year olds who will not be 18 years old by July 3, 2017, should audition for the 13 – 17 age group (Level III). Dancers will be placed by the Artistic staff in the level that is most beneficial and challenging to the student.
  • A limited amount of financial aid is available to students attending our Summer Program. Students are not eligible to apply until they have been accepted into our Intensive. Aid will be awarded based on the student’s financial need – it is not merit based.
  • Video auditions are approved on a case by case basis depending on a dancer’s availability for a live audition; however, we highly encourage all students to audition in person. Video audition requests must be emailed to Krista Ellensohn no later than Sunday, February 26. Video auditions will not be accepted after Sunday, February 26.
