Internship Opportunities



Hubbard Street Dance Chicago offers rich and stimulating internship opportunities for college and graduate students seeking experience in administration, artistic administration, videography, lighting, education, development and marketing. Hubbard Street provides interns interested in dance and arts management the experience of working behind the scenes in one of the world’s leading contemporary dance companies. Interns have the opportunity to enhance their skills and knowledge of arts management while working closely with the staff and artists of Hubbard Street.


Hubbard Street Dance Chicago interns are integral members of the organization. Interns receive an e-mail address and extension, and are entrusted with a number of challenging responsibilities. Interns work with Hubbard Street’s administrative and artistic staff to build knowledge, experience, and confidence in arts management. Interns have the opportunity to work at the theater when the company is performing in Chicago’s Harris Theater for Music and Dance, and see company performances. While these positions do not offer any financial compensation, unless otherwise noted, all interns are welcome to take an unlimited number of free classes at the Lou Conte Dance Studio.


 


Finance & Administration

Hubbard Street’s Administrative department is comprised of the Sr. Manager of Finance and Administration and the Accounting Coordinator. Together the administrative department manages aspects related to accounting, personnel, facilities and IT needs of Hubbard Street. The Administrative Intern has the opportunity to learn general operating procedures, as well as specific skills, including: learning accounting software, application of basic accounting principles, proficiency on office equipment, organizational skills, and more.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Assist Finance and Administration Department
Answer and directs telephone calls
Assist with accounts payable and accounts receivable
Prepare deposits
Prepare journal entries
Reconcile credit card statements
Sort mail
Monitor office supply usage
Monitor office equipment
Misc. IT support
General filing
Other duties as assigned

 

 

Artistic Administration

Hubbard Street’s Artistic Administration department is comprised of the Artistic Director, the Artistic Administrator and the Company Manager. The Artistic Administration department manages all contractual and logistical aspects of Hubbard Street’s season, both here in Chicago and on national and international tours. The Artistic Administration intern will work directly with Hubbard Street’s General Manager and Company Manager on the operations of both Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and Hubbard Street 2.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Participate in all aspects of the company’s contractual and logistical operations 
Coordinate music licensing 
Coordinate choreography licensing 
Manage designer contracts 
Track company repertory 
Research company tour destinations and travel 
Apply for travel visas 
General administrative tasks such as mailings and filing 
Other duties as assigned

 

Videography

Hubbard Street’s videography intern is primarily responsible for working with artistic and marketing staff to complete all video requests/needs. Videography interns work on a large variety of creative projects directly in support of Hubbard Street's mission, while building a rich video portfolio with studio, theater and interview/documentary-style footage.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Taping performances, studio showings, rehearsals, interviews, and other events as needed
Producing clips for presenters, the company website, YouTube or other internet usage
Editing, converting, and compressing full performances
Editing large amounts of footage to small, comprehensive segments
Watermarking full pieces
Creating repertoire DVDs
Copying DVDs
Retrieving work from archives for use by choreographers and dancers
Updating video database
Updating and maintaining organizational structure of external hard drives
Assisting in rental or acquisition of appropriate visual and audio equipment
Use of the following Mac programs: iMovie, Motion, Cinematize, Compressor, Final Cut, VLC and other video conversion software
Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Access, Word, Excel, Outlook, as well as Mac software helpful.

 

Lighting

This internship will provide its recipient with the knowledge necessary to light for a touring dance company. The Lighting Intern will be responsible with assisting the Lighting Director and Production Manager in the day-to-day operations of the Production Department specifically in regards to the lighting department. The successful Lighting Intern should have a working knowledge of theatrical lighting and production practices, and should either possess or be pursuing a baccalaureate degree in Lighting Design. Graduate students are also encouraged to apply. The Lighting Intern will be working on projects involving both Hubbard Street Dance Chicago’s main company, and Hubbard Street 2.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Helping to maintain Archival Lighting Paperwork for current and past repertoire
Helping to review technical information on, and evaluate potential performance venues
Helping to maintain the current tech rider and advance technical info for future performances
Helping to document new repertoire
Help evaluate potential repertoire acquisitions
Helping to research lighting and projection equipment
Assisting with the preparation and on-site execution of Chicago-area performances
Other duties as assigned

 

Education

School Programs Intern
Hubbard Street Dance Chicago’s Education, and Community department is comprised of the Director of Education, Youth and Community Programs, Senior Manager of school Partnerships, and Community Programs Manager. Together the Youth, Education, and Community department manages all aspects of the organization’s school and community partnerships, youth classes and camps, family programming and performances, and the Adaptive Dance program. The Education Intern has the opportunity to learn about Hubbard Street’s progressive and dynamic approach to making movement and contemporary dance accessible in schools and the community. The education intern will primarily work within the in-school research project, with various administrative duties necessary to support this comprehensive education department. The education intern will have the opportunity to view teaching, but will not teach in any programs.

Provide administrative support to Education staff
Transcribe meeting audio data entry
Administrative preparation for the school year
Marketing support

Youth Dance Program Administrative Intern

Gain hands-on experience in dance education with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago’s renowned Youth Dance Program Summer Camps, assisting our experienced teaching artists and staff. Camp Interns are responsible for a wide variety of teaching and administrative support tasks.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Organize and update mailing lists
Assist with marketing/flyer drop for the Youth Dance Programs
General office duties, such as photocopying, faxing, filing, etc.
Keep departmental calendar up-to-date
Assist in organization of documentation and archives
Assist in departmental and organizational data entry and database management
Other duties as assigned


Youth Dance Program Summer Dance Camp Assistant

Gain hands-on experience in dance education with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago’s renowned Youth Dance Program Summer Camps, assisting our experienced teaching artists and staff. Camp Interns are responsible for a wide variety of teaching and administrative support tasks.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Leading/Assisting Warm-up
Assisting with individual students during lessons and activities
Assisting students with daily activities such as restroom trips and snack time
Overseeing Breaks and Snacks
Attendance Tracking
Assisting with Check-in/out
Monitoring Authorization forms
Collecting First day Packets
Documenting with video and photos when necessary
Assisting with preparations for and clean up after for the final sharing

 

Development

Hubbard Street’s Development department is comprised of the Director of External Affairs and four full-time staff members. Together the group is responsible for raising contributed revenue of more than $3.5 million. Hubbard Street’s development department supports all components of the organization including the main company, Hubbard Street 2 (HS2), Hubbard Street Youth, Education, and Community Programs, and the Lou Conte Dance Studio.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Assist with event planning and working alongside staff at events to cultivate donors
Assist with organization and execution of annual fund mailings
Assist with donor acknowledgement and donor stewardship process
Proof reading grant and sponsorship proposals and reports
Prospect Research – individuals, corporations, and foundations
Update donor records in Tessitura database (Hubbard Street will provide training)
Create board orientation binders
Record development expenses in Excel
Various data entry projects using Tessitura database
General filing
Other duties as assigned

Marketing

Hubbard Street’s Marketing department is comprised of the Chief Marketing and Development Officer, and four full-time staff members: the Associate Director of Marketing, Manager of Communication, Manager of Ticketing and Patron Services and the Marketing Coordinator. This department is responsible for the generation of all earned revenue through ticket sales; development and implementation of local, national and international marketing and public relations strategies; maintaining the Hubbard Street Dance Chicago brand through all components of the organization; and the production of all press and publicity materials for the company. Hubbard Street’s marketing department supports all components of the organization: Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Hubbard Street 2 (HS2), Hubbard Street Youth, Education, and Community Programs and Lou Conte Dance Studio.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Coordinate public relations projects, including press release mailings and maintenance of press kits and media archives
Assist with special event planning for audience development initiatives
Assist with patron and customer relations
Assist with development and implementation of  promotional opportunities
Assist the marketing staff with various short- and long-term projects
E-Communications: Creating e-blast content and layouts,  extracting Tessitura lists,  managing reports
Managing and creating content for Social Media
Assist with website updates and management

Assist with departmental Expense Tracking
