More information on Hubbard Street 2’s “Harold and the Purple Crayon: A Dance Adventure” by choreographers Robyn Mineko Williams and Terence Marling:
HS2, a company of six young professional dancers associated with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and its Education and Community Programs, is excited to present this new educational dance adventure inspired by the 1955 classic children’s book, Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson. The book tells the story of a young boy named Harold, who, equipped with his purple crayon and an infinite imagination, choreographs his own adventures. Harold and the Purple Crayon: A Dance Adventure is an hour-long, interactive dance adaptation in which children, ages 4+, and their families can help create Harold’s next adventure through their own exploration of movement.
Taryn Kaschock Russell, director of HS2, became excited about the idea of bringing Harold to life on the stage while reading Harold and the Purple Crayon to her son. “After reading Harold’s adventures again as an adult, I found myself immediately making connections between how Harold creates his own world with his purple crayon and how we create new works at Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. I hope that this work will inspire children to use their imagination and bodies to communicate through movement.”
Harold and the Purple Crayon: A Dance Adventure is HS2’s first program-length work created specifically for young people and families. Join us for this exciting, interactive dance adventure with Harold and his purple crayon!
